The dance and music festival in Chennai is celebrated to keep the popular culture and traditions going and going well. The festival marks the classical music and dance performances that are characteristic features of the South Indian culture. Music and dance festival is celebrated in the month of December and at several places and venues. The festival is organized by various cultural academies or 'Sabhas.'

The dance and music festival was first organized in the year 1927. Known as 'Marghazi festival of music and dance', the event commemorates the inception of Madras Music Academy. The air, during this festival, is filled with the rythm of concerts held everywhere. It marks high time for the budding artists who can be seen actively participating in the events. These events are further enlightened by the presence of the scholars and great artists from the region and around.

The festival is also popular following the status ascribed to the Carnatic music. The music which is kind of devotional is extensively practiced and performed. There are solo and group dance performances, accompanied by the traditional music. The festival continues for one whole month.

The instrumental performances include Flute, Veena, Pipe, Drum and sometimes a mud pot are held at many places in the city. These are accompanied by traditional songs in Tamil, Telegu and Kanada. The festival provides rich insights about the South Indian culture.
